Côte Roannaise, located in the far south of the Loire region, produces rosé and red wines exclusively from Gamay.


Location: Located in the north of the Loire department, Côte Roannaise extends north to south along the Loire River. Along with the Côtes de Forez, it is one of the Loire Valley’s southernmost vineyards. Communes include: Ambierle, Bully, Changy, Crozet, Lentigny, Pacaudière, Renaison, Saint-Alban les Eaux, Saint-André d’Apchon, Saint-Haon le Châtel, Saint-Jean Maurice-sur-Loire, Villemontais, and Villerest.

Surface Area:

  • 215 hectares / 531 acres

Soil: The altitude varies from 200-350 meters (656-1,148 feet). Vines are planted in primarily granite soils. Sand and gravel, the result of erosion, provide good drainage.

Climate: The climate is semi-continental, with annual rainfall of 750mm (30 inches), 450mm (18 inches) of which occurs between March and September, during the vine’s growing period. The average annual temperature is 11.7 degrees C (53 degrees F). Located on a hill that runs north-south and open to the east on the Loire plain, the vineyards receive good sun exposure.

Grape Variety:

Growing/Production Practices: Minimum planting density 4,500 vines/hectare. Gobelet or cord pruning with 2 buds, single Guyot pruning with a single long cane with a maximum of 8 buds and short cane with 2 buds are all used.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Intense garnet or ruby red 
  • Nose: Fruity and aromatic with notes of black currant
  • Flavors: Medium-bodied with ripe red berry flavors and soft tannins
  • Appearance: Pale salmon pink
  • Nose: Fresh aromas of strawberries and red berries
  • Flavors: Light-bodied and refreshing, some wines made in off-dry style
